In the beginning I was concerned about my students' computer skills but now I realised that they are pretty good at it. Today is our first day on wiki ,so I tried to support them online. I could see them editing ,writing and commenting. They asked me questions when they had difficulties. Two of my students changed the front page and deleted the other class' name. Some of my students created their own pages which made it difficult for me to control their writings. I tried to change the setting but it requests upgrade and we need to pay for the upgrade. I wrote directions for them to follow but I have lots of confident students who likes being different. Do you have any sugestions how I can manage my students' writings?

On thıs wıkı you can not stop them creatıng pages wıthout payıng for the wıkı.
ReplyDeleteSee how ıt goes as they mıght calm down after the ınıtıal excıtement- tell them you wıll not gıve them a grade unless theır wrıtıng ıs on the rıght page.
One other way round thıs ıs to get them to make theır postıngs as comments and change theır permıssıon level to reader- see below. Thıs does make ıt more lıke a blog wıth the teacher beıng totally ın control though.
Then the best postıngs (or all ıf you wısh) can be copıed by you and put on to the wıkı.
Readers
Readers cannot make any modifications at all to a workspace. They can view pages, RSS feeds, and files. They can also see the history of changes that have been made to a page. By default, readers can make comments on a workspace, without being able to edit the workspace itself. This setting can be modified by going to "Settings" and then "Workspace Security."
I talked to them today and told them not to create new pages. Let's see how it works. As you said they are very excited now.If it doesn't work,I'll try your suggestion. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteHale, your students are highly motivated; mine, on the other hand, haven't even tried to take a look at their accounts which I'd created for them! God, sometimes I wish I was PAris Hilton minding my own business of just hanging around!
